She sat on the floor

She sat on the floor

over her spilled purse

that she had decided to

clean out at the start

of fall.

She unwrinkled receipts

for soda and mexican food

and saved ticket stubs for

midnight shows.

She wasn’t ready to see

the leaves wrinkle like

the old receipts.

And with one motion

and a heavy sigh

she swept up wrappers

and receipts in her hand,

threw them in the trash

and never looked back.
